The castle that had been built by the Bathory family is mentioned for the first time in 1549. By the 18th century it became badly ruined. The National Monument Preserving Office in 1985 declared the castle a monument. In this way the utterly ruined north palace became one of the most significant late-gothic remains of Hungary. The Bathory Castle was re-built in 2006 and thanks to this it is available to the public today. In its loft a room with the space of 80 people can be found and it is equipped with state-of-the-art technical equipments. The room is air-conditioned and it is an ideal place for different events, conferences or educational purposes. In the cellar a medieval renaissance restaurant was created that has a space for 60-100 people. The temporary exhibition of the Bathory Castle based on historical facts depicts the era and legends of the Bathory family. In the waxworks 45 life-sized wax figures in five different scenes tell the most important events of the 16th and 17th, together with the most famous and infamous personalities of that age.
